🐾 American Airlines In-Cabin Pet Overview

American Airlines allows small cats and dogs to travel in the cabin on most flights, as long as they meet size and carrier requirements.

Quick highlights:

  • Only cats and dogs are permitted

  • Pet must be at least 8 weeks old for domestic travel

  • Pets must remain in their carrier for the entire flight (including head and tail)

  • Flights must typically be under 12 hours

  • Carrier must fit under the seat in front of you

  • Your pet counts as your carry-on item

  • No weight limit. (American previously had a 21lb weight limit for cabin pets that included the pet and the carrier. But as of 2026 the weight limit is not being enforced)

💵 What is the in-cabin pet fee for American Airlines?

Fees:

  • $150 each way, per pet

  • Additional $150 fee may apply for layovers over 4 hours

❌ Notible restrictrions on in-cabin pet travel with American Airlines:

Capacity limits:

  • ~5–7 pets per flight depending on aircraft

  • First-come, first-served basis What this means: you should make a pet reservation in advance, and arrive at least two hours before departure. Sometimes customers can walk-up with a pet and fill all required spots even if they do not have a reservation. Causing you to get bumped to the next available flight. This is VERY rare, but all pet seats are first come first serve.

Carrier guidelines:

  • Soft-sided: up to 18” x 11” x 11”  with nylon/mesh ventilation on at least three sides. American Airlines allows pet carriers that exceed these dimensions as long as they are soft and flexible. Here is an example of a pet carrier we often use on American Airlines without any issues.

  • Pet must be able to fit comfortably with the zipper closed.

Destination restrictions:

·      Pets are not permitted in-cabin on flights to or from Hawaii

·      In-cabin pets are not permitted on trans-Atlantic flights (to Europe for example)

·      Cabin pets are not allowed on most flights to or from South America

✅ How do you check-in with a cabin pet on American Airlines?

When traveling with a cabin pet on American Airlines you will not be able to get your boarding pass ahead of time. Instead, you will need to check in at the ticket counter on the day of travel. It is recommended to arrive 1.5-2 hours before departure. At the ticket counter simply hand them your ID and let them know your destination and that you have a cabin pet. They will do a quick visual inspection, sometimes they weigh your pet and his bag, ocassionally have you sign a paper agreeing not to take your pet out of his carrier, and then you pay the $150 fee using any major card. They will hand you a pet receipt and your boarding pass and then you are free to go through security.

🌎 Can pets fly in-cabin on international flights with American Airlines?

American Airlines allows in-cabin pets on select international routes, including:

  • U.S. ↔ Canada

  • U.S. ↔ Mexico

  • Caribbean destinations (like Puerto Rico & USVI)

Key considerations:

  • Minimum age is set by the destination country. For example, Mexico and Canada allow pets to enter in-cabin at 8 weeks old. However, any pet arriving into the USA from outside the country must be at least 6 months old according to new CDC guidelines.

  • Must meet destination country requirements (vaccines, microchip, etc.)

  • Health certificate often required within 10 days of travel. For Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean you can typically ask your vet to use the APHIS 7001 form. This does not require an official USDA endorsement.

💡 Every country has different rules—this is where working with a pet travel professional (like PurplePup ) becomes incredibly valuable.

🐶 🐶 Does American Airlines allow you to travel with two pets?

Yes, you can travel with two pets, but there are limitations.

Options:

  • Two small pets may share a carrier if they are of the same breed and fit comfortably. You pay just one $150 pet fee for the carrier.

  • You can bring two pet carriers with two pets total if you purchase an additional seat. To book two pets it is best to call to make your reservation. Ask for an additional seat. Then tell them you will be traveling with two pets. Make sure your assigned seats are next to each other. You will pay the $150 pet fee for each carrier when you checkin on the day of travel.

💡 Pro tip: Ask them to take you off of the upgrade list so your seats don’t get separated from each other. This has happened to us many times and it is very challenging for the staff to fix it on the day of travel.

Important:

  • Each carrier counts as a carry-on. (You are technically only allowed to bring on two bags total. But in reality, we usually board with two pets and a backpack without issue)

  • You must still stay within the per-flight pet limit .

American Airlines is a solid, mid-tier option for flying with pets in-cabin; especially for domestic travel.
